This lovely Suffragette necklace, in violet, green, and white, is historically and socially significant. This beautiful pendant has the wonderful flare of the Arts and Crafts movement of the period. The top of the pendant is an independent bar of sculpted gold holding a small pearl; hanging from the bar by a set of 2 chains is a golden plaque set with square Peridots and a Pearl drop. Suspended from beneath each peridot are long swinging pendants with pearls that terminate in pear-shaped amethysts. The long, elegant pendant is beautifully articulated and hangs from a fine cable chain. Circa 1910, 14k.
The Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) was one of many organizations working for women's right to vote in the US and England. In 1908, WSPU declared green, white, and violet the colors of their movement. These colors represented the qualities of Suffragettes: violet for dignity, white for purity, and green for hope. This group of colors became a mainstream Suffragette symbol, and some companies even marketed items in this color palette as "Suffragette Jewelry."
